Q & A
Question: Can this be used to merge two signals (eg, left and right channels) to a single mono signal? Or is it only designed to duplicate a mono signal coming in?

Answer: Y cables can be used to split a signal, but shouldn't be used to combine signals. It will work, but it won't sound very good and the volumes won't be equal.
