The first guitar amp that brought the Traynor name back into the world of modern tube amps was the YCV40, and it continues on today. Real tube overdrive is provided by three 12AX7WA dual triode preamp tubes while real tube power is provided by two 5881WXT beam power tubes. The internal gadgetry in this channel switching amp provides good flexibility, but makes it very easy to get a great tone. The combination of the tube power and the Celestion speaker is magical. The three basic tones (clean, crunch and overdrive) are easily defined. With great tone at low levels, and shine and punch at full tilt, the Custom Valve 40 has received rave reviews for over 10 years, including Guitar Player magazine's Editor's Pick Award in 2001.

Although signal-to-noise is not normally a specification that is discussed where guitar amplifiers are concerned, the ultra-quiet Custom Valve 40 makes it an issue. Experienced professional users will appreciate the auto-matching tube circuit that maintains bias balance as tubes age ensuring hum free performance. Listen carefully. Although the YCV40 has a tremendous amount of gain it remains virtually hum free.

The rear mounted control panel is easy to access, yet recessed for protection. And the warranty? Yorkville's standard two year (even if you break it!) transferable warranty*. The one that made Traynor famous in the sixties.

Had this for almost 2 years and I really like the overall sound. Lead channel rocks. Channel switching is fast and clean. The YCV 20 has a delay in switching. Features: Wish It had a reverb switch and a Master Volume. Quality: well built and solid Value: Priced right but seems to have a low resell or trade in value even with a transferable warranty. Overall: This beast is loud and heavy. A smaller channel/OD footswitch would be an improvement as it takes up a lot. of real estate in my pedal board.

I’m on my 3rd amp. The first one I blew a speaker so I bought a Fender to replace it. The Fender acted up so I bought a second YCV40 out of rental and the it was a huge improvement. After many gigs I traded the 2nd Traynor in for the same model amp. I find amps wear out and lose their tone after about 4 years from weekend gigs. Great amp, sounds good clean or dirty. I just use the on-board gain ( no overdrive pedal)and a little delay. Great reverb.

I was on a 9 month hunt for a tube combo. Budget was max $1500. My priority was a beautiful shimmering clean tone that sounded great at gig levels but still pretty good at home. If it had a gain channel, that was gravy, but I have plenty of pedals so that was of very little concern. I tried a lot of Fender amps Hot Rod Deluxe, Blues Deluxe, 65 DRRI, 68 Custom DR, Supersonic 22 and Bassbreaker 30r. Truth be told I really wanted that Fender name. Anyway, I was surprised how much I love this amp. Its not just good, it's really really good. Cleans are excellent, and distortion is shockingly good. Its crystal clear at bedroom tones, but a little light touch from a clean boost at bedroom levels and this thing comes alive even when it's really quiet. That said, I could immediately hear what Id read about the shrill top end from the Celestion Seventy 80 speaker (not a bad speaker at all but they really belong on a closed back cabinet), so I swapped it forsn Eminence C-Rexi had lyingaround....Night and Day difference. It went from being as good clean as the HotRod Deluxe, to much much better. I know this doesnt make any sense, but with the C-rex speaker in it, theclean tone sounds much more like a 65 DRRI to me, only with much more head room. That speaker tirned this thing into one of my favourite amps. Im in love And all for an insanely good price.

I bought a new YCV40 WR as a better option to Fender Hot Rod lll and I loved it but at one point while thinning the heard, I sold it to a guy who really needed it. The following day I regretted my decision. I have just got myself another YCV40 and plan on keeping it. The only issues I have is it needs a master volume and I think I'll swap the Celestion 70/80 speaker for the Vintage 30 that my WR had. All n all a Great Amp.

I bought this used - it was used to demo guitars at the local L and M store. I had used the 20 watt model for a month but for pub jams I needed a few more watts. This has enough headroom to keep up with the drummer and the rest of the band. I use the clean channel only with an ME80 pedal board to add a little comp/delay/boost as needed. Works well, good value, simple to set up. Checks all the boxes for my needs.

Like a lot of people, I kind of brushed off Traynor as a bit of a Canadian no name amp. Never really have them a close listen. Thought they might be something that was an easy sell to those that couldn't afford the better stuff. Well, I have a very different view now. I had a good listen to this model, YVC40, and thought what a great clean channel. To my surprise, the gain channel was just as good. Great at low volumes as well. Reverb is very strong, not hiding like on some. If you can't find a good blues sound or classic rock, I can't help you. The only thing it seems to be missing is a Master Volume. That is about all that's missing. Built like a tank. Easy to upgrade a few things, should that be of interest.

I have an older model YCV40 that I bought used and it has been very reliable. It has a few battle scars from gigging which adds character. It also has a screen over the speaker which has saved the speaker from damage. I've changed the power tubes to JJs and love the tone. On the clean channel there is a little operational hiss but on the gain channel it operates quietly. This amp can get loud but I can also practice in a small room without getting yelled by my wife too often. Highly recommended.

I have an older version of this amp and it works great. I have a compared it to a couple of other similar sized tube amps and have been totally impressed with the tone. My LP, strat, and tele sound awesome with it and my Ibanez TS works very well. Solidly built in Canada. I emailed Traynor with a question and received very helpful feedback the following day. I can't say that with all stores and companies.

Best tube amp in this price point! Better than Fender IMHO. At least for what I use it for, which is mostly blues, jazz and old rock. The clean channel sounds awesome. The lead channel offers lots of flexibility and fine tuning in setting the "break point" where overdrive can be heard depending on how much volume you use in your picking. The Celestion performs superbly. The amp sounds good at low volume too, no need to crank it up in order to get sounds quality. But if you turn up the volume knob this is where the amp really sings without losing any quality. Definitely one of the best designed amp, ever. And it's Canadian! Eh!

Performance Warranty Banner

Protect your investment with the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty

A warranty can be a very important factor when making a buying decision. Because repairs can be very expensive in terms of parts and labour costs, manufacturers usually only provide one year limited warranties that generally only cover items that malfunction due to a manufacturer’s defect. With an important purchase such as a musical
instrument or piece of studio gear, however, many people want to have the peace of mind in knowing that their investment will be protected should the product no longer be performing at 100%.

Because of this, Long & McQuade provides our customers with a FREE one-year Performance Warranty on most of our products. The Long & McQuade Performance Warranty supplements the manufacturer’s warranty to ensure that our customers receive complete “no hassle” warranty coverage within their first year.

How does the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty differ from most manufacturers' warranties?
  • Performance Guarantee: Normal wear and tear is covered, so your product will be performing as well as the day you purchased it for the entire duration of the coverage. Band and Orchestral Performance Warranty does not include replacing pads or cleaning for woodwind instruments, unless deemed necessary by our repair staff. Ultrasonic cleaning for brass instruments will be provided if deemed necessary by our repair staff, but is not routinely offered under the Performance Warranty.
  • Product Replacement: If your product cannot be fixed or costs too much to fix, we will replace it with the equivalent model for no additional charge. If this is not possible, a full refund will be provided.
  • No Lemon Policy: Your product will be replaced should the same problem occur multiple times.
  • Convenient: Easy drop off and pick up of the product at any Long & McQuade location.
  • Guitar Setup: Guitars purchased at Long & McQuade come with 1 free setup, to be redeemed within 1 year for new guitars and 90 days for used guitars.
  • Loaners Available: A loaner product may be given while the product is being repaired.
  • Power Surge Protection: Your product is covered even if damaged from a power surge.
  • Accessory Coverage: Any peripheral devices or accessories that come with your product (i.e. foot pedal, case) are also covered.
  • Commercial Use Coverage: Music and recording professionals who purchase gear for “heavy-use” commercial purposes will still be covered.

Long & McQuade reserves the right to restrict the purchase of additional years of Performance Warranty. Used products come with a 3-month Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Some products (i.e. computers, software, cymbals and other items) are covered only by the manufacturer‘s warranty. Consumables (i.e. strings, reeds, drum sticks, batteries, tubes, cross faders) are excluded as they are designed to be replaced. Cosmetic Damage, Accidental Damage, or problems caused by Humidity or Temperature Issues are not covered. Speakers damaged by overpowering are generally not covered. Our coverage does not provide compensation for loss of use. As of June 2018 the Performance Warranty is no longer transferable. The warranty is only valid in Canada.

Purchasing additional years of coverage

Some manufacturers provide warranties for longer than 1 year; however, these are usually limited warranties that do not provide the same coverage as the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Customers interested in more complete and convenient (but not necessarily longer) coverage are still able to purchase additional years of the Performance Warranty.

If you are interested in receiving this coverage for longer than one year, you have the option of purchasing additional years of the Performance Warranty. The pricing is as follows:

  • NEW products: Starting at 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. Starting at 4% for each additional year.
  • USED products: Starting at 4% of the current new selling price to increase the warranty from 3 months to 1 year. Starting at 4% for each additional year.
  • GUITARS: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year. $45 maximum. An additional free setup is not included with additional purchased years of Performance Warranty.
  • BAND and ORCHESTRAL instruments: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year.
