Not long before this march was written, Great Britain had observed the centennial of the Battle of Trafalgar. In that battle, the British Navy, commanded by Lord Horatio Nelson, defeated the French and Spanish fleets, capturing twenty ships and losing none. Lord Nelson, who was mortally wounded during the battle, died a short time later he is commemorated by the Nelson column in Londons Trafalgar Square.
