As the saying goes, "necessity is the mother of invention". Rhythmic Roots quickly came together through teaching. In the never-ending quest to find better learning methods, several years ago I starting requiring percussionists to use their feet and legs to solidify their sense of time when they played classical music. This approach was new to many students, but rather logical to the ones with drum set in their background. Regardless, it initiated a number of ideas for teaching percussionists and non-percussionists alike. Everything became a drumset-centric endeavour. The results were inspiring and led to several compositional brainstorms. One of the first was this piece.
Rhythmic Roots is a title with a double entendre. It certainly explores the relationship between the lower limbs and the upper limbs -- a valuable skill in developing time and rhythm. It utilizes material from musical roots, as well. I chose three different styles; a second-line groove, a waltz, and some typical themes from samba music. These three feels and rhythms are foundational, and have influenced a tremendous number of composers and descendent musical styles. These inspirations and ideas are composed in varied rudimental and classical snare drum styles, with hi-hat and bass drum accompaniment.
Modern percussionists need to understand a growing number of musical styles. I hope Rhythmic Roots can add a measure of understanding and musical freedom.
