The warmth of tube amps has been the goal for most of the over-drive pedals that exist. However, the Tube Screamer has been the choice 2nd to none by people searching for the best, because it lets the guitar sing so well in its original voice. The tone can be heard in playing by countless musicians over the years and still keeps fascinating new generations.

Q & A

Question: is it made in japan? or taiwan
- asked on May 16, 2024
Answer: TS-9 Tube Screamers are made in Taiwan and China.

Only the re-issues were made in Japan, and not since 2002.

Yeah, the reviews are real; this SHOULD BE the first pedal, after your tuner and compressor. It just makes clean gain a reality. Made in Japan - I was surprised when most comparable BOSS pedals are not. At the price, why not add it? Other than the old school big switch, it’s perfect. Get it, now.

Is an okay overdrive on its own but works best as a boost using your amps distortion. I like it best with the gain at 0.5/10 level at 9.5/10 and tone slightly past noon, to push a clean amp to breakup or boost an already overdriven amp. If you play metal this honestly does work so dang well as a boot to tighten up the bottom end.

Whether you're a huge SRV fan or just looking to add a little more crunch to your amp's distortion, the TS9 is a must have.

I will start by saying I own this pedal love the tonal qualities but dislike the button to turn it on. Every now and then when I need that bit of grit for a solo boost it takes a few attempts to turn on over all if you can get past that the sound is pretty decent

Had this since the mid 1980's. It is banged up a little bit but is still a must have pedal. Took me a long time to love because it is not a distortion pedal more of a boost pedal. This pedal along with the right amp is brilliant. I use a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe 3. Great sounds you get with the TS9. Would recommend this product if you are into blues, but it will take a while before you get the best sounds you are looking for.

I'm running this with Fender and Mesa amps on the clean channel with the drive off and level up, it's a great sounding overdrive, adds that mid push. Also great as a boost on the OD channel as well. Great pedal for blues and rock. As well, when I had a look inside the circuit board, it has the famous JRC4558D chip which is an awesome bonus!

Got this recently, it's great for blues, country and rock, not so much for metal though. It's a great sounding effect that almost adds another dimension to the sound when used correctly. If you're a blues player its a must have, country a must have, rock a must have. Just a great pedal.

This thing sounds great in front of my Marshall Tube Amp on either the Clean or Boost channel. Does not have a super amount of Overdrive, but enough to complement the Amp. I set all the knobs to 12 O'Clock, crank the gain on the amp and roll the volume on the guitar. It will get you all the classic rock sounds you need. It is built like a tank and runs on 9 Volt battery or DC supply. Stevie Ray Vaughn used a variant of this.so it must be good.

Do not buy this thinking of it as an overdrive pedal. It is best used as a boost pedal in front of an already breaking up tube amp or even into an over drive pedal. This pedal has a mid frequency push which sounds great in a band setting, but may sound thin to you if you playing solo without a band or backing track. The bass should come from the bass player, not the guitar player .. lol.

In short, it does what it's supposed to do. It works far better with an already overdriven tube amp and as a boost or for a solo, (actually it is GREAT for this), but lacks as a stand alone OD unit sounding a bit thin and lacking warmth. Certainly not the best OD on the market, but far from the worst.

I use this pedal in front of my Peavey 6505+ just to make the output a bit stronger before reaching the amp. It's great.

It's way over hyped and not that good! Save your money and buy a nice overdrive that's been hand built with great care. From builders like JHS, Erthquaker Devices or Walrous Audio to name a few. Or if you really want this one buy the modded version by JHS it's about the same price and sounds a heck of a lot better!

I have tried to like this pedal since the early 80's but everytime I think of tweaking/changing my sound by adding a TS9, I play one and I remember why I never bought one in the first place. It is overhyped and uninspiring. My memory may be failing but so is this pedal.

Great pedal. I simply love mine. It works great as a boost and on its own as an overdrive. It could be used for AC/DC which is an added bonus for me :)

Performance Warranty Banner

Protect your investment with the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty

A warranty can be a very important factor when making a buying decision. Because repairs can be very expensive in terms of parts and labour costs, manufacturers usually only provide one year limited warranties that generally only cover items that malfunction due to a manufacturer’s defect. With an important purchase such as a musical
instrument or piece of studio gear, however, many people want to have the peace of mind in knowing that their investment will be protected should the product no longer be performing at 100%.

Because of this, Long & McQuade provides our customers with a FREE one-year Performance Warranty on most of our products. The Long & McQuade Performance Warranty supplements the manufacturer’s warranty to ensure that our customers receive complete “no hassle” warranty coverage within their first year.

How does the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty differ from most manufacturers' warranties?
  • Performance Guarantee: Normal wear and tear is covered, so your product will be performing as well as the day you purchased it for the entire duration of the coverage. Band and Orchestral Performance Warranty does not include replacing pads or cleaning for woodwind instruments, unless deemed necessary by our repair staff. Ultrasonic cleaning for brass instruments will be provided if deemed necessary by our repair staff, but is not routinely offered under the Performance Warranty.
  • Product Replacement: If your product cannot be fixed or costs too much to fix, we will replace it with the equivalent model for no additional charge. If this is not possible, a full refund will be provided.
  • No Lemon Policy: Your product will be replaced should the same problem occur multiple times.
  • Convenient: Easy drop off and pick up of the product at any Long & McQuade location.
  • Guitar Setup: Guitars purchased at Long & McQuade come with 1 free setup, to be redeemed within 1 year for new guitars and 90 days for used guitars.
  • Loaners Available: A loaner product may be given while the product is being repaired.
  • Power Surge Protection: Your product is covered even if damaged from a power surge.
  • Accessory Coverage: Any peripheral devices or accessories that come with your product (i.e. foot pedal, case) are also covered.
  • Commercial Use Coverage: Music and recording professionals who purchase gear for “heavy-use” commercial purposes will still be covered.

Long & McQuade reserves the right to restrict the purchase of additional years of Performance Warranty. Used products come with a 3-month Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Some products (i.e. computers, software, cymbals and other items) are covered only by the manufacturer‘s warranty. Consumables (i.e. strings, reeds, drum sticks, batteries, tubes, cross faders) are excluded as they are designed to be replaced. Cosmetic Damage, Accidental Damage, or problems caused by Humidity or Temperature Issues are not covered. Speakers damaged by overpowering are generally not covered. Our coverage does not provide compensation for loss of use. As of June 2018 the Performance Warranty is no longer transferable. The warranty is only valid in Canada.

Purchasing additional years of coverage

Some manufacturers provide warranties for longer than 1 year; however, these are usually limited warranties that do not provide the same coverage as the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Customers interested in more complete and convenient (but not necessarily longer) coverage are still able to purchase additional years of the Performance Warranty.

If you are interested in receiving this coverage for longer than one year, you have the option of purchasing additional years of the Performance Warranty. The pricing is as follows:

  • NEW products: Starting at 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. Starting at 4% for each additional year.
  • USED products: Starting at 4% of the current new selling price to increase the warranty from 3 months to 1 year. Starting at 4% for each additional year.
  • GUITARS: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year. $45 maximum. An additional free setup is not included with additional purchased years of Performance Warranty.
  • BAND and ORCHESTRAL instruments: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year.
