Some guitars are more special than others, even when that guitar is owned by a world-famous guitarist and guitar collector like Joe Bonamassa. In 1996, he purchased a red 1962 Gibson ES-335 and used it on his first solo album, A New Day Yesterday. In 2001, he regrettably sold the guitar to help fund his move from New York to LA. As the 20th anniversary of Joe's first record approached, a strange twist of fate and an unexpected phone call resulted in Joe being reunited with his old friend, the red ES-335 that propelled him through his first solo effort and launched him into a new life on the West Coast. Feeling fortunate to get his old guitar back, Joe promised that this important instrument would stay with him for the rest of his days.

The Epiphone Joe Bonamassa 1962 ES-335 is a tribute to a legendary guitarist and one of his cherished instruments. It features a one-piece mahogany neck with an Indian laurel fretboard and a comfortable Rounded C profile, Gibson BurstBucker 2 and 3 pickups wired to CTS potentiometers and Mallory capacitors, A Switchcraft pickup selector toggle switch and output jack, and a Maestro Vibrola. A custom hardshell case with Epiphone and Joe Bonamassa graphics and a certificate of authenticity are also included.

Wow went into Long & McQuade Oshawa - picked this up and played it and was impressed right away with the action and playability of this work of art. Sounds and plays great, stays in tune better than a Gibson and has the same or better quality as the namebrand Gibson as well. With only 2000 of these made globally it is sure to be a great investment in addition to being a great guitar.

My first impression upon seeing this guitar on sale was the seemingly high price for a non-USA Epiphone. Months later, after looking for a semi-hollow body electric as a straight-up trade for an old acoustic, I came across this 335 again and started to do a little research. After countless tech reviews and video reviews, including deep dives on the build and wiring quality (to say nothing of the sparkling user reviews) I decided to take a look and was still surprised at the sound quality. The guitar is resonant, with sustain and clarity and can get very gnarly yet still retain articulation. It sounded great unplugged, fingerpicking, soloing, chord strumming; whatever use and whatever style this thing did not disappoint. And again, I was initially scoffing at the idea of this taking the place of a standard Gibson 335, which I was hoping eventually save up and purchase well down the road. But the build quality is legitimately there: It's limited run, 2000 total made, hand-crafted and then brought to the USA for inspection, with CTS pots and Mallory caps, along with a Switchcraft 3-way toggle switch and output jack. It has a one-piece solid neck and Gibson Burstbuckers (the exact pickups I had envisioned on my eventual Gibson 335 purchase). There's also a custom, molded hardshell case included. To say I am ecstatic about this purchase is not an overstatement. 4699$ (plus tax) gets you a standard Gibson cherry dot, gloss 335; here you get the cherry gloss, with block inlays, mind you, and a vibrola to boot. The Indian Laurel is smooth and comfortable and looks and sounds a lot like Rosewood. The poly finish may not be nitro, but poly has some pros that nitro doesn't have (and, to me, is more desirable). Really, it's only the "made in" label that's a legitimate area of concern and even then, with this signature line, you get a non-mass produced, hand-crafted instrument with USA quality control/inspection. Very highly recommended!

I have multiple guitars of different brands and from different eras and this guitar instantly rocketed to the top of my favorites list. I ordered it sight unseen and un-played and I had no hesitancy making the purchase, but of course, having not tried it, there is always a little nag in the back of the mind. The sticker price seemed a bit high at first glance until I understood that it has very high quality Gibson pickups and other high quality electronics and construction materials, then once I saw it, felt it and plugged it in, all doubts I may have had vanished instantly with the first chord I played. The tone is amazing whether playing clean, crunchy or even at very high gain, it still has the full spectrum of each note being fretted. It is a joy to play and the sustain is unmatched in my other guitars. I love the tremolo and have even performed a couple dive bombs that it actually recovered from quite well despite not being a locking tremolo system, definitely much better than I anticipated, but my intention is to not use it like that and do the mild vibrato/tremolo that is more apropos to the era of the guitar, it was just a test :). Oh, and it is beautiful, one of the nicest, if not the nicest, looking guitar that I own. Build quality is exceptional, finish is exceptional, and it came out of the case in tune and very well set up with a set of Gibson strings on it that I still have not changed, just had to stretch them out properly. The case is awesome too. Everything about this guitar screams quality and it plays like a dream. Love it and recommend it very highly. Of course, having an endorsement from Joe himself lends a lot of credibility to it as well. Get one, you won't regret it.

The guitar has a warm and clear sound... that means it has deep tone, but not a muddy bass end to it. The Burst Buckers are dynamic and have clarity and chime, even while the tone knobs are turned down half way. I play it through a Marshall tube amp with a touch of compression and reverb.. It allows a mild distortion to be easily found without much gain, so its sound carries and is easily modeled to keep the guitar tone full. Its got fullness and a bit of growl.
It really has a ton of sustain and rings for about 20 seconds thanks to the through neck. That warm fullness has changed the way I hear some kinds of music.
It represents a great chance to own an ES 335 with the short block inlays, loooong neck, and quality electronics. I have a Bonamassa Lazarus Les Paul with 50s wiring, so it made me convinced to buy this one outright without playing it first. There was not reason to worry about that decision. The photos online don't do the colour justice, as its very red, semi transparent with visible wood grain under a very bright, glossy finish. The gloss suits my taste rather than a satin finish as Ive got old guitars from the 1980s with gloss finish still good after 35 plus years.

Performance Warranty Banner

Protect your investment with the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty

A warranty can be a very important factor when making a buying decision. Because repairs can be very expensive in terms of parts and labour costs, manufacturers usually only provide one year limited warranties that generally only cover items that malfunction due to a manufacturer’s defect. With an important purchase such as a musical
instrument or piece of studio gear, however, many people want to have the peace of mind in knowing that their investment will be protected should the product no longer be performing at 100%.

Because of this, Long & McQuade provides our customers with a FREE one-year Performance Warranty on most of our products. The Long & McQuade Performance Warranty supplements the manufacturer’s warranty to ensure that our customers receive complete “no hassle” warranty coverage within their first year.

How does the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty differ from most manufacturers' warranties?
  • Performance Guarantee: Normal wear and tear is covered, so your product will be performing as well as the day you purchased it for the entire duration of the coverage. Band and Orchestral Performance Warranty does not include replacing pads or cleaning for woodwind instruments, unless deemed necessary by our repair staff. Ultrasonic cleaning for brass instruments will be provided if deemed necessary by our repair staff, but is not routinely offered under the Performance Warranty.
  • Product Replacement: If your product cannot be fixed or costs too much to fix, we will replace it with the equivalent model for no additional charge. If this is not possible, a full refund will be provided.
  • No Lemon Policy: Your product will be replaced should the same problem occur multiple times.
  • Convenient: Easy drop off and pick up of the product at any Long & McQuade location.
  • Guitar Setup: Guitars purchased at Long & McQuade come with 1 free setup, to be redeemed within 1 year for new guitars and 90 days for used guitars.
  • Loaners Available: A loaner product may be given while the product is being repaired.
  • Power Surge Protection: Your product is covered even if damaged from a power surge.
  • Accessory Coverage: Any peripheral devices or accessories that come with your product (i.e. foot pedal, case) are also covered.
  • Commercial Use Coverage: Music and recording professionals who purchase gear for “heavy-use” commercial purposes will still be covered.

Long & McQuade reserves the right to restrict the purchase of additional years of Performance Warranty. Used products come with a 3-month Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Some products (i.e. computers, software, cymbals and other items) are covered only by the manufacturer‘s warranty. Consumables (i.e. strings, reeds, drum sticks, batteries, tubes, cross faders) are excluded as they are designed to be replaced. Cosmetic Damage, Accidental Damage, or problems caused by Humidity or Temperature Issues are not covered. Speakers damaged by overpowering are generally not covered. Our coverage does not provide compensation for loss of use. As of June 2018 the Performance Warranty is no longer transferable. The warranty is only valid in Canada.

Purchasing additional years of coverage

Some manufacturers provide warranties for longer than 1 year; however, these are usually limited warranties that do not provide the same coverage as the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Customers interested in more complete and convenient (but not necessarily longer) coverage are still able to purchase additional years of the Performance Warranty.

If you are interested in receiving this coverage for longer than one year, you have the option of purchasing additional years of the Performance Warranty. The pricing is as follows:

  • NEW products: Starting at 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. Starting at 4% for each additional year.
  • USED products: Starting at 4% of the current new selling price to increase the warranty from 3 months to 1 year. Starting at 4% for each additional year.
  • GUITARS: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year. $45 maximum. An additional free setup is not included with additional purchased years of Performance Warranty.
  • BAND and ORCHESTRAL instruments: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year.
