Sound-wise, the playback sound and guitar effects are much nicer than the R16 right out of the box.
The compressors are very useful on this. The R16 compressors I found useless.
The ability to improve on already great sounding guitar effects sets it way above the R16's abilities. I could never get a great sounding metal tone out of the R16, but the presets in the R20 are nice even before tweaking them.
Navigating through songs with markers was easier with the R16 since there was dedicated marker buttons, though I've had this 1 week and haven't checked out the online manual to see if there are easier options to make markers.
Those R16 marker buttons were SOOOO easy, though.
Too bad I didn't wait a week though....the darn things went from $519 to $449 in less than 1 week! D'oh!!!!

I bought the Zoom R-20 because I wasn't familiar with computer program DAWs and had always worked on standalones. I found just reading the instructions on DAWs and the tinkering involved to much of a hassle. I'm a hand-on, tactile amateur musician and learn better from doing than reading about/studying about it.
The R-20 is more compact than my last standalone; a Tascam 2488 MrkII. It's hands on (faders, knobs) but also has a 4.3" full colour LCD touchscreen with colour-coded tracks for each track (knobs colour-coded, too).
The LCD has short-cut icons at the top for easy access to settings. Mine came with a free-to-use version of Cubase-LE. Unfortunately, although I followed instructions verbatim, I can't download the user interface for the program, just the plug-ins, etc. Zoom couldn't help me with the problem; I've tried in vain to contact Steinberg about it (as I've read others have as well). I may have to contact Yamaha, Steinberg's rep in Canada.
It doesn't come with a CD burner, which I'm used to so I will have to transfer master songs to a DAW at some time, I think.
It's a great little machine for amateurs 'cause face it, pros go mostly to recording studios with higher-end equipment.
I'm quite satisfied and Long & McQuade has been fantastic in helping me out with financing. No complaints, here.
