Stanley Sadie's fascination with Mozart's unfinished compositions preoccupied him all his life. During his last decade, Sadie turned his attention to a number of arias that Mozart left unfinished or that survive incomplete, and by the end of 1998, he had completed nine arias in orchestral score, as presented in this volume. Seven are for soprano and two are for tenor. Included are three discarded arias from Mitridate; three arias about whose origins little is known, K. 119/382h, K. 440/383h, and K. 435/416b; a rejected insertion aria for an Anfossi opera, K. 178/417a; the abandoned act-4 rondo for Susanna in Le nozze di Figaro; and an unfinished insertion aria for a Paisiello opera, K. 580. Eight of these arias have been performed in public venues, some more than once, between 1999 and 2009, and it is hoped that this edition will provide the basis for more performances of these attractive works in the future.
