Buy the left handed version to play right handed. The double strings are better on the bottom. I like upside-down (left vs. right) tuning of E - A - DD. I can barely play. I learned scales in my forties and like no. This thing is like the easiest twangy acoustic bass you'll ever buy.

I've had my Merlin m4 for about 3 years now and I simply love it. All my kids love the sound, that in between of a banjo and a dulcimer, just brings dancing to the living room. This is good for the non musicians, or people intimidated learning strings. It helps people learn basic techniques on a smaller neck and less frets. Worth every penny from top of the line Segull!

The Merlin is great for a beginner or someone who doesn't have the time, patience, or "talent" to learn an instrument. But as a guitar and 5-string banjo player, I can say that it's also a ton of fun for a non-beginner. Like a harmonica, the Merlin limits you to playing in one key (G or D, depending on the model), but it makes it REALLY easy to play in that key. There are no outside-the-key notes available on the instrument, so you can't really play a "wrong" note. I'm not a songwriter, but I find that when I play it, new melody ideas just flow out of it. The build quality is amazing. Very well made, sturdy, with a beautiful, clean, understated finish. Excellent value for the price. Probably gonna buy a D (spruce top) model soon.

I’ve had this for a while now and I really love it! It’s easy to just pick it up and play something. Has a unique dulcimer sound. It projects very well and is really fun to play. I totally recommend this. It’s worth the money

As a Busker and traveler I find the compact length amazing, The Body is pretty slender too and fits easily into any back pack. The action is in a great place whether you're using a pick or your fingers and hitting sour notes is almost non-existent with the diatonic fret board. Chords are fun and easy often only needing to bar the fret and they're close enough together that getting use to playing this is fast. It does have that Appalachian dulcimer sound in a smaller package but I can honestly say that it does lack in the amount of frets but for this price who can complain. Its certainly better than that uke you we're probably just looking at xD

This is an instrument that whether you are 6 or 66 will be the easiest to play and enjoy. You may not be able to play complex music, but it is by far the most fun instrument I've come across in a long time. The sound projection and quality are great for such a small instrument. It allows any player to come up with a basic tune in a very short period of time and if you just strum away at it - you will figure something out.

Best money I've spent spent on anything musical since I don't know when! Everyone comments on the quality of sound that comes from it. I find it fun/easy... As far as Making melodies its like drawing with a black pen, and then being handed a bunch of coloured pens!

This guitar/dulcimer has become my favourite instrument to play around with since I got it three months ago. The sound is so delightful. This instrument really appeals to my percussive/rhythmic side and I am still discovering little technique tricks that add more and more depth to the playing experience. I am not a trained musician. You really don't need to be to have fun with this.

A very nice instrument. Easy to play. Wasn't sure at first, but after 30 minutes of playing, I had 6 chords going. Strings are hard to find. Overall, a great value and lots of fun.

I got this for my 5-year-old son (AND for myself?), a few days ago. Within 5 minutes after putting it in his hands, he was playing "Old MacDonald" & "Twinkle Little Star"! It's amazing how fast and easily you'll work out your favourite melodies. I actually find it relaxing to play. If you're looking to introduce someone, of any age, to the joy of playing a stringed instrument, the Merlin is what you want. P.S. I would recommend getting the strap & gig bag for this. Also available on this site, I believe.

With 7 frets and four strings (really two and a pair) the Merlin is one of the least intimidating and most fun instruments a raw beginner could play. I'm having lots of challenges and success because of its design. Great!

My first Merlin from a few months ago had intonation issues on the A string, so reluctantly returned it. Bought another one recently and it looks like Seagull has fixed the issue in later production runs. I couldn't be happier with it...great little instrument that adds a nice flair of variation at the weekly jamming group!

It may not look like much but this little Merlin is a true musical workhorse the tone of the mahogany top and maple body has crisp richness that adds harmony as a backing instrument for any genre (I play finnish folk metal) the neck is great all-in-all this instrument is perfect.

That's what people were saying on the internet. And they were right! Great for beginners of stringed instruments, but also for seasoned musicians looking for a new toy. It's simple to use, yet the possibilities are endless. That being said; it will have some trouble staying in tune because of its size. But anything by the "Godin" family of instruments is hard to beat! Great celtic sound too.

This is a fun little instrument - quick to pick up and play, and very difficult to put back down. It's similar to a mountain dulcimer, but with only 7 frets you're somewhat limited. Nevertheless it's an amazingly fun instrument to play around with. I've played it every day since I picked it up earlier this summer...

Performance Warranty Banner

Protect your investment with the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty

A warranty can be a very important factor when making a buying decision. Because repairs can be very expensive in terms of parts and labour costs, manufacturers usually only provide one year limited warranties that generally only cover items that malfunction due to a manufacturer’s defect. With an important purchase such as a musical
instrument or piece of studio gear, however, many people want to have the peace of mind in knowing that their investment will be protected should the product no longer be performing at 100%.

Because of this, Long & McQuade provides our customers with a FREE one-year Performance Warranty on most of our products. The Long & McQuade Performance Warranty supplements the manufacturer’s warranty to ensure that our customers receive complete “no hassle” warranty coverage within their first year.

How does the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty differ from most manufacturers' warranties?
  • Performance Guarantee: Normal wear and tear is covered, so your product will be performing as well as the day you purchased it for the entire duration of the coverage. Band and Orchestral Performance Warranty does not include replacing pads or cleaning for woodwind instruments, unless deemed necessary by our repair staff. Ultrasonic cleaning for brass instruments will be provided if deemed necessary by our repair staff, but is not routinely offered under the Performance Warranty.
  • Product Replacement: If your product cannot be fixed or costs too much to fix, we will replace it with the equivalent model for no additional charge. If this is not possible, a full refund will be provided.
  • No Lemon Policy: Your product will be replaced should the same problem occur multiple times.
  • Convenient: Easy drop off and pick up of the product at any Long & McQuade location.
  • Guitar Setup: Guitars purchased at Long & McQuade come with 1 free setup, to be redeemed within 1 year for new guitars and 90 days for used guitars.
  • Loaners Available: A loaner product may be given while the product is being repaired.
  • Power Surge Protection: Your product is covered even if damaged from a power surge.
  • Accessory Coverage: Any peripheral devices or accessories that come with your product (i.e. foot pedal, case) are also covered.
  • Commercial Use Coverage: Music and recording professionals who purchase gear for “heavy-use” commercial purposes will still be covered.

Long & McQuade reserves the right to restrict the purchase of additional years of Performance Warranty. Used products come with a 3-month Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Some products (i.e. computers, software, cymbals and other items) are covered only by the manufacturer‘s warranty. Consumables (i.e. strings, reeds, drum sticks, batteries, tubes, cross faders) are excluded as they are designed to be replaced. Cosmetic Damage, Accidental Damage, or problems caused by Humidity or Temperature Issues are not covered. Speakers damaged by overpowering are generally not covered. Our coverage does not provide compensation for loss of use. As of June 2018 the Performance Warranty is no longer transferable. The warranty is only valid in Canada.

Purchasing additional years of coverage

Some manufacturers provide warranties for longer than 1 year; however, these are usually limited warranties that do not provide the same coverage as the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Customers interested in more complete and convenient (but not necessarily longer) coverage are still able to purchase additional years of the Performance Warranty.

If you are interested in receiving this coverage for longer than one year, you have the option of purchasing additional years of the Performance Warranty. The pricing is as follows:

  • NEW products: Starting at 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. Starting at 4% for each additional year.
  • USED products: Starting at 4% of the current new selling price to increase the warranty from 3 months to 1 year. Starting at 4% for each additional year.
  • GUITARS: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year. $45 maximum. An additional free setup is not included with additional purchased years of Performance Warranty.
  • BAND and ORCHESTRAL instruments: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year.
