This collection of preludes is a very dear part of my repertoire, in particular, Prelude no. 1. Featuring a beautifully arched, sweeping melody, with a shimmering, impressionistic-like arpeggiated accompaniment that is shared between the right and left hands, the piece is beautifully crafted, and brings joy to the listener and performer alike. I personally have performed Prelude no. 1 widely, including regional and provincial music festivals, recitals, radio and television broadcasts, and as a List E piece for my Grade 10 Royal Conservatory of Music exam, each being met with success and an extremely warm and enthusiastic reception. It is truly a treasure, and it remains to be among my favourite pieces I have ever performed.

These "Piano Preludes" written in the first half of the 20th century by a great pianist and piano pedagogue, John Melnyk - are well-crafted and accessible both pianistically and musically. Whether you are an aspiring pianist or a professional looking for something new and interesting to program on your next recital, these short gems by J. Melnyk will be very satisfying to play AND to listen to. Highly recommend!

To any pianist interested in Canada's rich and too-often neglected compositional history, this beautiful edition of John Melnyk Sr.'s Three Preludes for Piano is a must-have. I had the great fortune to discover these recently after hearing a terrific performance of one on the radio and upon receiving the score, had a delightful experience. The preludes are at times introspective, sometimes turbulent; the composer writes with great sensitivity as to the colors and advantages of the instrument. Arpeggios and three-hand technique define large passages of the works, and while a good performance of the piece is impressive, they are by no means off-limits to the skilled and dedicated amateur (speaking from my own experience). A particular highlight of this score was the care with which it was produced. The composer's son edited and set the pieces, and despite their complexity, the score was very clean from start to finish. The warmth inherent in the production was particularly evident in the biography and personal vignettes about the composer, which made the compositions all that much more approachable. My collection of piano music is all the better for having found this edition, and I hope you'll be able to say the same!

I can't speak highly enough of the production values, but the music exceeds even those. The technical challenges are there, but somehow the magic of emotional experience isn't obscured--except when due to the foibles of the pianist!
