Overall, the LP Wood Tapa has a great tone when paired with the right snare drum. I will start with the only problem: The Wood Tapa will not fit all snare drums. I have three 8 lug 14 inch snare drums and it would not fit the Ludwig Acrolite. The issue is that the Wood Tapa extends 3 cm (1 1/4 inches) past the outside of the drum and at least 1.25 cm (half inch) below the rim. As a result, many throw offs cannot engage the snares with the wood tapa on the snare drum. You could use the wood top without the throw off, but then you are limited to either snares off or tighten the snares so they are always on. Less than ideal and this will be a problem on many snare drums, especially those that are only 5 or 5.5 inches deep.
It did fit my T.L. (Terry Laurenzio) Custom six inch snare drum and my Pearl Modern Utility Floor Snare drum (14X10 inches).
It sounds great on both snares, but I personally like the sound better on the deeper snare drum. With the snares engaged, the deeper sound in the center still sounds like a snare, just a lower pitch than close to the edge of the wood top. With the snares on it works great with nylon brushes. With the snares off, the wood tapa really sings. It works great with hands, but I find with the Vater Cajon Brush (very heavy brush) it really sounds great. Fantastic distinction between the low and high pitch sounds. Also, there is a range of pitches available depending on where you hit the wood head. It also works well with soft timpani mallets.
I recommend this product as long as you confirm that it will fit the snare drum it is intended for without interfering with the throw off.
