In Book 1, choice melodies are used to teach the notes. Accompaniment technique (introduced at the precise time the pupil is ready for it) is used to teach the chords. This results in a perfect blend of solo playing and chord accompaniment supported by a wealth of fundamental musical knowledge. Learning is actually accomplished in the midst of beautiful harmonies (for melody or voice accompaniment) and complete, ready to perform solos.
After the first three strings are taught, easy chords are brought in, with the 4th string immediately following. When the student acquires strength and dexterity in fingering, the more difficult 5th and 6th strings are handled.
