On 14 November 1828 Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy surprised his three-year older sister Fanny with a piano piece in E-flat major bearing the title 'Lied'. Shortly after, Fanny referred to the gift in her musical album as a 'Lied ohne Worte' ('Song without Words'). This represents the first use of the term under which the present lyrical piano pieces were later to become so popular. Six books of 'Songs without words' had Mendelssohn published during his lifetime, two further books were printed after the composer's death.
The present edition not only contains these 48 well-known Lieder ohne Worte, but also gives some single pieces transmitted separately. In terms of title and character they also belong to the genre 'Songs without Words'. Among others they include that first above mentioned 'Song without Words' from 14 November 1828. These additional pieces, a part of which is published here for the first time, have been included in the Wiener Urtext edition, and thus made available for the musical practice.
