New for 2012, the AC-6 Resonator Banjo may stray a bit from the traditional wood body banjo design, but it packs a punch like no other and will stand up against any 6-string banjo in it's price range. The rim and resonator are molded from a composite material that is strong, consistent, and durable. Whether this is your first 6-string banjo, or you seek the ultimate travel banjo, this banjo packs more than enough heat to echo through the hills and shine in any campfire jam! Padded gigbag included.

The first one that I took home had big problems - sharp fret ends, terrible action. The very helpful staff at L&M Pembina took it back right away and found me another one at a different store. This one was fine. My conclusion is that this is a compromise instrument that doesn't quite work (for me). Strings 5 & 6 do not sound like a banjo at all - strings 1-4 are fine. That suggests to me that a 4 string plectrum style banjo would work better for the old time jazz banjo playing that interests me. The pickup is loud and clear, but plugged into a good acoustic amp this sounded even less like a banjo - perhaps the factory placement of the pickup close to the neck is not the best location. The pickup can be moved but I didn't take the time to open it up and attempt this. The output jack is also in a slightly awkward position for sitting and playing. So it does a job, but not quite what I was seeking.

I'm not a banjo player. I'm barely a guitar player, but I've always loved the sound of banjo. I picked up a five string off Kijiji, and despite some helpful youtube videos, it doesn't get off the wall much. I picked up the Gold Tone AC-6+ to try it when visiting my local Long and McQuade, and fifteen minutes later was walking out of the store with it. For $720, you get the instrument, case and a pick up with volume control. It has a resonator that looks like the tray a potted plant sits in, the tuners seem a bit cheap, the neck is simple. But its less cheap than minimalist. It came with the set up pretty well perfect for me, feels like you're playing a telecaster, intonation was okay, a bit sharp. Here's the main thing. It sounds like a banjo and because it's set up like a guitar, it's a lot easier to play if that's your instrument. I found it to be a tad unbalanced, the neck pulls it down on that side. There are no strap hooks, you have to tie something to the tensioners on the ring, but otherwise, you got a banjo, or at least what sure sounds like one. In a few days, I've spent a lot more time playing this than the five string that sits, admired and largely abandoned, on the wall. I'm still figuring out the pick up, basically its a little self contained humbucker that sits just under the head, attached to the inside rod with clips, and seems, somehow to capture some banjo twang, even though it's only picking up the movement of steel strings. Haven't tried to change strings yet, that might be more complicated with the floating bridge, but it appears to take regular electric guitar strings, the loops fit on little pegs on the tailpiece. I expect that the hard core banjo guys will sniff at this, but for us pretenders, this is a great little instrument.

This instrument has a great sound at first, but once you try to master it, you barely hear the second note if you do a slide or a pull, the touch is VERY HARD and gets worst going down the neck. It is a very good alternative for people who do not want to learn banjo and get a sound for background banjo ambiance, but do not expect to play a good sound quality solo on this. Also the composite resonator is VERY VERY fragile, don't drop it !! But overall, it is good.

The solid neck has a smooth and fast feel, playability great, easy transition from playing guitar to having fun on this plucky ganjo. Components are solid and sturdy. I might lower the action a bit as I get to know the instrument, but no problem out of the box. It's a keeper!

Performance Warranty Banner

Protect your investment with the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty

A warranty can be a very important factor when making a buying decision. Because repairs can be very expensive in terms of parts and labour costs, manufacturers usually only provide one year limited warranties that generally only cover items that malfunction due to a manufacturer’s defect. With an important purchase such as a musical
instrument or piece of studio gear, however, many people want to have the peace of mind in knowing that their investment will be protected should the product no longer be performing at 100%.

Because of this, Long & McQuade provides our customers with a FREE one-year Performance Warranty on most of our products. The Long & McQuade Performance Warranty supplements the manufacturer’s warranty to ensure that our customers receive complete “no hassle” warranty coverage within their first year.

How does the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty differ from most manufacturers' warranties?
  • Performance Guarantee: Normal wear and tear is covered, so your product will be performing as well as the day you purchased it for the entire duration of the coverage. Band and Orchestral Performance Warranty does not include replacing pads or cleaning for woodwind instruments, unless deemed necessary by our repair staff. Ultrasonic cleaning for brass instruments will be provided if deemed necessary by our repair staff, but is not routinely offered under the Performance Warranty.
  • Product Replacement: If your product cannot be fixed or costs too much to fix, we will replace it with the equivalent model for no additional charge. If this is not possible, a full refund will be provided.
  • No Lemon Policy: Your product will be replaced should the same problem occur multiple times.
  • Convenient: Easy drop off and pick up of the product at any Long & McQuade location.
  • Guitar Setup: Guitars purchased at Long & McQuade come with 1 free setup, to be redeemed within 1 year for new guitars and 90 days for used guitars.
  • Loaners Available: A loaner product may be given while the product is being repaired.
  • Power Surge Protection: Your product is covered even if damaged from a power surge.
  • Accessory Coverage: Any peripheral devices or accessories that come with your product (i.e. foot pedal, case) are also covered.
  • Commercial Use Coverage: Music and recording professionals who purchase gear for “heavy-use” commercial purposes will still be covered.

Long & McQuade reserves the right to restrict the purchase of additional years of Performance Warranty. Used products come with a 3-month Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Some products (i.e. computers, software, cymbals and other items) are covered only by the manufacturer‘s warranty. Consumables (i.e. strings, reeds, drum sticks, batteries, tubes, cross faders) are excluded as they are designed to be replaced. Cosmetic Damage, Accidental Damage, or problems caused by Humidity or Temperature Issues are not covered. Speakers damaged by overpowering are generally not covered. Our coverage does not provide compensation for loss of use. As of June 2018 the Performance Warranty is no longer transferable. The warranty is only valid in Canada.

Purchasing additional years of coverage

Some manufacturers provide warranties for longer than 1 year; however, these are usually limited warranties that do not provide the same coverage as the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Customers interested in more complete and convenient (but not necessarily longer) coverage are still able to purchase additional years of the Performance Warranty.

If you are interested in receiving this coverage for longer than one year, you have the option of purchasing additional years of the Performance Warranty. The pricing is as follows:

  • NEW products: Starting at 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. Starting at 4% for each additional year.
  • USED products: Starting at 4% of the current new selling price to increase the warranty from 3 months to 1 year. Starting at 4% for each additional year.
  • GUITARS: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year. $45 maximum. An additional free setup is not included with additional purchased years of Performance Warranty.
  • BAND and ORCHESTRAL instruments: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year.
