The fact that the sonata did not find a publisher at that time was due at first to Busoni's youth, and later to his changed aesthetic principles, which made other pieces seem more important to him.

The work now available as a first print after the autograph in the German State Library in Berlin, presents a characteristic attempt to solve the sonata problem, and certainly reveals models such as Bach, Beethoven and Brahms. Nevertheless, there are strongly independent traits such as the considerable demands made on playing technique or harmonic turns of phrase, which point far beyond Wagner to the modern age. Thus the F minor Sonata is regarded as exemplary for a particular creative period of Busoni, whom Eduard Hanslick described at the time as "a talent still in full fermentation".
