I own the 50w combo with 2x12” speakers. It is close to 30 years old and I have only had on potentiometer replaced and tubes changes, the latter is normal for any vacuum tube amps over time. The amp sounds great. I generally use the lead channel with gain about mid point and clean up with my guitars volume knob. I use a boost with my strat for this but not with my Les Paul. Given the price difference with the other UK built Marshall’s it is well worth considering. Don’t worry about the clipping diodes in the gain stage. Just use your ears and you may be pleasantly surprised. If not that’s ok too of course. I own 5 Marshalls, and this is my favourite.

I owned a 900 for many years and getting rid of it was good decision. Don't make the same mistake I did. You will not find warm satisfying tube distortion on this amplifier. The clean channel is always overly bright and the drive channel sounds like stomp box distortion.

I own the 1993 100 watt version and I always get tubes replaced every so often. I play in a working classic rock cover band and a heavy original band. From an Eagles song to Metallica (or whatever,) this thing has you covered. I never touch the clean channel, I just dial in the pre amp to 5 or 6ish and turn my guitar down a bit for a Beatles song for example. For a heavy tune crank the pre amp and use the yellow boss pedal for a boost if needed (but isn't really, I use the boost to solo when the pre amp turned down or simply turn my guitar up) - but regardless of a boost your DONE 1000 percent! The reverb is huge too I only need it on 2 or 3 as its big. I'm a working rock player and fussy as hell with amp tones but this is THE ONE for life for me (and you need a quality 4x12 cab to go with.) Also I rented the new re-release model while mine was having tubes replaced and it sounded identical to me!

I've owned both the 50 watt combo and the 100 watt head and both have been indestructible. I jammed/gigged regularly with one for 10 years with no issues. The 900 gets some flack from the Marshall purists because of the solid state gain that it has, but judge it by the sound not the reputation some vintage gear snobs have given it. The 5881 (rather than el34) tubes give it a different, more aggressive and punchy tone than most Marshalls but if you are looking for an amp with sharper, almost Fender like cleans as well as that Marshall crunch and beyond, it's a great amp, and really underrated. Great for any heavy rock, punk, and classic metal sounds.

I just bought this amp used from L&M for $599 and it is in killer shape. So far in the little time I've owned it it sounds pretty killer. So amount of gain and good tonal control. Probably sound amazing with an overdrive pedal and some delay in front.

I own one from the 90's. This is the amp for all things rock and metal through the 90's and even a lot of the modern stuff. Not as much gain on tap as a Mesa, but do you really want your riffs to sound like mush? With the gain on 1/2, and a boost of your choice out front, power chord chunk sounds like a cannon going off! Punchy and mean and perfect for cutting through the mix in a band. Also, a little trick: Put a patch cable between the send/return of the fx loop, and dial the fx level until you hear it get louder. At this point the amp goes into destroy mode. Gets even better with an EQ and/or a boost in the loop. WARNING: Only do this if you want to make your band members jealous. One thing to note, is that there is a lot of hate out there for this amp because the EQ is a little odd to use. Dial it in with your ears, not your eyes.

Performance Warranty Banner

Protect your investment with the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty

A warranty can be a very important factor when making a buying decision. Because repairs can be very expensive in terms of parts and labour costs, manufacturers usually only provide one year limited warranties that generally only cover items that malfunction due to a manufacturer’s defect. With an important purchase such as a musical
instrument or piece of studio gear, however, many people want to have the peace of mind in knowing that their investment will be protected should the product no longer be performing at 100%.

Because of this, Long & McQuade provides our customers with a FREE one-year Performance Warranty on most of our products. The Long & McQuade Performance Warranty supplements the manufacturer’s warranty to ensure that our customers receive complete “no hassle” warranty coverage within their first year.

How does the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty differ from most manufacturers' warranties?
  • Performance Guarantee: Normal wear and tear is covered, so your product will be performing as well as the day you purchased it for the entire duration of the coverage. Band and Orchestral Performance Warranty does not include replacing pads or cleaning for woodwind instruments, unless deemed necessary by our repair staff. Ultrasonic cleaning for brass instruments will be provided if deemed necessary by our repair staff, but is not routinely offered under the Performance Warranty.
  • Product Replacement: If your product cannot be fixed or costs too much to fix, we will replace it with the equivalent model for no additional charge. If this is not possible, a full refund will be provided.
  • No Lemon Policy: Your product will be replaced should the same problem occur multiple times.
  • Convenient: Easy drop off and pick up of the product at any Long & McQuade location.
  • Guitar Setup: Guitars purchased at Long & McQuade come with 1 free setup, to be redeemed within 1 year for new guitars and 90 days for used guitars.
  • Loaners Available: A loaner product may be given while the product is being repaired.
  • Power Surge Protection: Your product is covered even if damaged from a power surge.
  • Accessory Coverage: Any peripheral devices or accessories that come with your product (i.e. foot pedal, case) are also covered.
  • Commercial Use Coverage: Music and recording professionals who purchase gear for “heavy-use” commercial purposes will still be covered.

Long & McQuade reserves the right to restrict the purchase of additional years of Performance Warranty. Used products come with a 3-month Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Some products (i.e. computers, software, cymbals and other items) are covered only by the manufacturer‘s warranty. Consumables (i.e. strings, reeds, drum sticks, batteries, tubes, cross faders) are excluded as they are designed to be replaced. Cosmetic Damage, Accidental Damage, or problems caused by Humidity or Temperature Issues are not covered. Speakers damaged by overpowering are generally not covered. Our coverage does not provide compensation for loss of use. As of June 2018 the Performance Warranty is no longer transferable. The warranty is only valid in Canada.

Purchasing additional years of coverage

Some manufacturers provide warranties for longer than 1 year; however, these are usually limited warranties that do not provide the same coverage as the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Customers interested in more complete and convenient (but not necessarily longer) coverage are still able to purchase additional years of the Performance Warranty.

If you are interested in receiving this coverage for longer than one year, you have the option of purchasing additional years of the Performance Warranty. The pricing is as follows:

  • NEW products: Starting at 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. Starting at 4% for each additional year.
  • USED products: Starting at 4% of the current new selling price to increase the warranty from 3 months to 1 year. Starting at 4% for each additional year.
  • GUITARS: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year. $45 maximum. An additional free setup is not included with additional purchased years of Performance Warranty.
  • BAND and ORCHESTRAL instruments: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year.
