The MXR M77 Custom Modified Badass Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal is a classic overdrive circuit with modern modifications for improved performance and versatility.

For added flexibility, there's a 100HZ cut and boost control that allows for a more focused EQ when cut, or a beefier tone when boosted. The Bump switch engages an alternate EQ voicing that boosts the lows and mids. Put it in front of the '78 Custom Badass Distortion for a slew of amp-like gain structures that won't mask your tone.

I have owned the pedals for many years now pretty much since it launched and after a lot of trial and error and finding the pedal’s potential I feel confident enough about it to write a review. I will start with the 1 and only con about the pedal and that it’s noisy AF! When the bump is engaged and the gain is up past 12 o’clock she hums, like a high gain distortion pedal engaged when you’re not playing. A noise gate/suppressor definitely helps but it does not eliminate it. I played and compared this pedal side by side my Maxon OD808 and others. When the bump is off and the 100Hz knob is set to 12 o’clock (that’s zero it runs like -10 to +10) it’s pretty much an OD808/GT-OD with a little OD9 inside with some adjustments. The tone knob is far more responsive than that of a Maxon or Tubescreamer and noticeable. It does not colour your tone what so ever but the pedal some how in a clean channel is louder then any other OD. It’s a FANTASTIC clean boost in front of an already overdriven amp with more options to enhance or articulate your tone but doesn’t over do it. The Bump switch engages an alternate EQ voicing that boosts the lows and mids and does a real nice job of it and I removed my MXR 6 band EQ from my board because of it. The 100Hz knob was the perfect freq choice to add to the pedal not too much low end but enough thicken up your tone for those metal players or take it down to get some great Nashville twang. It’s a staple on my board along side my Maxon OD808 now I found multiple sweet spots in settings using this pedal. The 3 presets they offer in the manual are great for starting but I like the RAWK GAWD option with a little of my own tweaking. Of course there are better OD’s out there and you will have your own preferences but if you get a chance to try this pedal don’t pass on it.

Pour un son vraiment rock ou blues rock. Belle clarité des notes et juste assez de crunch. Pas pour le métal mais peux s’en approcher donc vraiment versatile. Un beau mélange entre une TS et OCD.

How did this one fly under my radar ? I always wanted a tube screamer type drive with more options and this has it all. It works great as a booster to a drive channel, great as a lower drive or higher drive pedal on it's on in the clean channel too. Note definitiion is there as well, I don't find it muddy at all with humbuckers. It's such a versatile pedal to have on any board. Great for classic rock and blues.

All I'll say is for what Ive been looking for in an OD , this has it. Awsome as a boost for front end, it tightens up the tone like a Tubescreamer, but then you can shape your tone with 3 different things, The mid boost , the Tone(for highs and high mid clarity) and the 100hz knob for your bottom end , or Roll off the 100hz to clean up the bottom! The mid boost will be more or less aparent depending on many things, at times it may seem to add alot(usually with cleaner setting) and sometimes it may seem to barely do anything(usually with more gain) but depends how the mids are set on the amp, pickup position etc, but its the most subtle out of the 3 tonal controls! Also I had the mid button break on my first pedal, but was no problem to get it replaced by L+M! This is one item I would reccomend extending warranty on incase the button breaks, other than that this is one Badass OD if you take the time with it! Also has lots of gain on tap for using with a clean channel and sounds very natural and amp like!

This pedal is very noisy. I don't have this problem with my MXR GT-OD. Maybe I received a defective one.

Excellent boost, and just the right amount of grime. More suited for blues and vintage rockers. Killer price too!

This pedal is a great transparent overdrive. Works as a great clean boost. Does not colour your tone and works great with single coils and humbuckers. Has a bump switch if you prefer a more tubescreamer-like sound (mid range bump). Great for many genres and the build quality is fantastic. For the price this pedal cannot be beat. 100z knob is good for lo-fi sounds and extra bass if you want. A fair amount of gain on tap, good classic rock tones. It exceeded my expectations. This pedal is a keeper.

Wonderful pedal. Overdriven tone without muddying the signal on my semi-hollowbody (as-103). Versatile, and as the other reviewer mentioned, it is very responsive.

This is an amazing pedal. It is responsive to your picking attack, and doesn't overly colour the tone of your guitar. Works great with single coils, but this baby really loves to get it on with humbuckers. MXR produces great pedals with great value for the amateur, semi-pro and pro musician alike. You can't go wrong here.

Protect your investment with the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty

A warranty can be a very important factor when making a buying decision. Because repairs can be very expensive in terms of parts and labour costs, manufacturers usually only provide one year limited warranties that generally only cover items that malfunction due to a manufacturer’s defect. With an important purchase such as a musical
instrument or piece of studio gear, however, many people want to have the peace of mind in knowing that their investment will be protected should the product no longer be performing at 100%.

Because of this, Long & McQuade provides our customers with a FREE one-year Performance Warranty on most of our products. The Long & McQuade Performance Warranty supplements the manufacturer’s warranty to ensure that our customers receive complete “no hassle” warranty coverage within their first year.

How does the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty differ from most manufacturers' warranties?
  • Performance Guarantee: Normal wear and tear is covered, so your product will be performing as well as the day you purchased it for the entire duration of the coverage. Band and Orchestral Performance Warranty does not include replacing pads or cleaning for woodwind instruments, unless deemed necessary by our repair staff. Ultrasonic cleaning for brass instruments will be provided if deemed necessary by our repair staff, but is not routinely offered under the Performance Warranty.
  • Product Replacement: If your product cannot be fixed or costs too much to fix, we will replace it with the equivalent model for no additional charge. If this is not possible, a full refund will be provided.
  • No Lemon Policy: Your product will be replaced should the same problem occur multiple times.
  • Convenient: Easy drop off and pick up of the product at any Long & McQuade location.
  • Guitar Setup: Guitars purchased at Long & McQuade come with 1 free setup, to be redeemed within 1 year for new guitars and 90 days for used guitars.
  • Loaners Available: A loaner product may be given while the product is being repaired.
  • Power Surge Protection: Your product is covered even if damaged from a power surge.
  • Accessory Coverage: Any peripheral devices or accessories that come with your product (i.e. foot pedal, case) are also covered.
  • Commercial Use Coverage: Music and recording professionals who purchase gear for “heavy-use” commercial purposes will still be covered.

Long & McQuade reserves the right to restrict the purchase of additional years of Performance Warranty. Used products come with a 3-month Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Some products (i.e. computers, software, cymbals and other items) are covered only by the manufacturer‘s warranty. Consumables (i.e. strings, reeds, drum sticks, batteries, tubes, cross faders) are excluded as they are designed to be replaced. Cosmetic Damage, Accidental Damage, or problems caused by Humidity or Temperature Issues are not covered. Speakers damaged by overpowering are generally not covered. Our coverage does not provide compensation for loss of use. As of June 2018 the Performance Warranty is no longer transferable. The warranty is only valid in Canada.

Purchasing additional years of coverage

Some manufacturers provide warranties for longer than 1 year; however, these are usually limited warranties that do not provide the same coverage as the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Customers interested in more complete and convenient (but not necessarily longer) coverage are still able to purchase additional years of the Performance Warranty.

If you are interested in receiving this coverage for longer than one year, you have the option of purchasing additional years of the Performance Warranty. The pricing is as follows:

  • NEW products: Starting at 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. Starting at 4% for each additional year.
  • USED products: Starting at 4% of the current new selling price to increase the warranty from 3 months to 1 year. Starting at 4% for each additional year.
  • GUITARS: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year. $45 maximum. An additional free setup is not included with additional purchased years of Performance Warranty.
  • BAND and ORCHESTRAL instruments: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year.
