The heart of your studio

Housed in a 1U rack-mountable enclosure, the third-generation 18i20 boasts extensive simultaneous I/O comprising eight mic preamps, 18 inputs and 20 outputs in total. Take your studio to the next level with the 18i20, offering superior sound quality, talkback functionality and onboard speaker switching. Improved A-D and D-A conversion ensures your recordings and playback will sound clear and pronounced up to 24-bit/192kHz, vital to helping you perfect your mix.

The Scarlett 18i20 features eight of Focusrite's best-ever-performing third-generation Scarlett mic preamps: with optional Air setting to reproduce the Air effect of their original ISA mic preamp, giving your vocal or acoustic recordings a brighter and more open sound. There's also a pad on every mic preamp to accommodate higher-level signals without clipping. The two front panel high-headroom instrument inputs allow you to record guitars and basses without any clipping or unwanted distortion.

Speaker-switching technology allows you to switch between main and alt monitors to get a new perspective on your mix, and the new built-in talkback mic lets you communicate with your recording artist at the touch of a button, helping you capture that perfect take.

A pair of virtual loopback inputs allows you to capture a stereo feed of any combination of hardware input and software playback channels making podcasting, live streaming and sampling tasks easier.

Excellent digital with solid USB connection and sample rate detection, and surprisingly tolerant SPDIF input (can make music even out of a motherboard TOSLINK output...) Analog outputs are very neutral, but some might call them a bit dry. The Focusrite Control mixing / routing config program is functional and intuitive but a bit ugly requiring scrolling and lacks the ability to organize various strips. But, if you're going to set-and-forget this, that's not a major drawback. Their WDM driver actually has a non-ASIO to ASIO bridge built in, so when you select the Focusrite as a default sound device, it can mix in non-ASIO streams into a pure ASIO loop. I found this out intentionally by experiment, but would not want to discover this by surprise with expensive monitors connected! (wink wink). All in all, this is certainly a pro-level and not pro-sumer level device, and at it's price point represents big features, great build quality, impressive sonics, good stability and over-all, very high value. I almost bought one after I returned the rental but I want to take it's big brother "Scarlett" for a test drive first.

Really happy with this device. I use it with the new Mac Studio M1 max pro. Pro Tools 2022.4 Ultimate and it is awesome. I work in film and TV so I need 5.1 capabilities. It will work in 7.2 if you meed it as there are 10 outputs available. And yes, the monitor control at the front does indeed control all of the 10 output levels simultaneously

I had started off with the Focusrite Scarlet 2i2 (2nd gen). And evolved into the 18i8 (3rd gen). These are both stubby desk top boxes. Really portable. I noticed the improvement in the noise floor with the 3rd generation. As I needed more outputs for work with DAW send/recv loops i was also getting into rack mount form factor. Being familiar with the Focusrite line it was a natural extension to move up to this. This works well without the little rack tabs to sit on a desk as well, if you don't have or want to rack mount it too. Being the 3rd gen it works with the "Focusrite Control" software, which is their way of setting up some of the settings like air, pad, and internal software mixing and routing options.. I am not entirely a fan of this approach, but mostly because I am the type who prefers knobs. But I guess to have so many options in a small form factor we need software to do some of it. I also use linux, so they do not have a version of their software for this. So I can't really take advantage of the excellent integrations and flexibility of software controlled mixing either.. What I end up doing is setting it up with a macbook and then forgetting it. Using JACK with Linux to do routing instead. I keep buying these Focusrite products for their features and the quality.. I guess if I had one regret it would I should have just started off with this unit. But then again the 3rd gen didn't exist yet when I started out too.

Performance Warranty Banner

Protect your investment with the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty

A warranty can be a very important factor when making a buying decision. Because repairs can be very expensive in terms of parts and labour costs, manufacturers usually only provide one year limited warranties that generally only cover items that malfunction due to a manufacturer’s defect. With an important purchase such as a musical
instrument or piece of studio gear, however, many people want to have the peace of mind in knowing that their investment will be protected should the product no longer be performing at 100%.

Because of this, Long & McQuade provides our customers with a FREE one-year Performance Warranty on most of our products. The Long & McQuade Performance Warranty supplements the manufacturer’s warranty to ensure that our customers receive complete “no hassle” warranty coverage within their first year.

How does the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty differ from most manufacturers' warranties?
  • Performance Guarantee: Normal wear and tear is covered, so your product will be performing as well as the day you purchased it for the entire duration of the coverage. Band and Orchestral Performance Warranty does not include replacing pads or cleaning for woodwind instruments, unless deemed necessary by our repair staff. Ultrasonic cleaning for brass instruments will be provided if deemed necessary by our repair staff, but is not routinely offered under the Performance Warranty.
  • Product Replacement: If your product cannot be fixed or costs too much to fix, we will replace it with the equivalent model for no additional charge. If this is not possible, a full refund will be provided.
  • No Lemon Policy: Your product will be replaced should the same problem occur multiple times.
  • Convenient: Easy drop off and pick up of the product at any Long & McQuade location.
  • Guitar Setup: Guitars purchased at Long & McQuade come with 1 free setup, to be redeemed within 1 year for new guitars and 90 days for used guitars.
  • Loaners Available: A loaner product may be given while the product is being repaired.
  • Power Surge Protection: Your product is covered even if damaged from a power surge.
  • Accessory Coverage: Any peripheral devices or accessories that come with your product (i.e. foot pedal, case) are also covered.
  • Commercial Use Coverage: Music and recording professionals who purchase gear for “heavy-use” commercial purposes will still be covered.

Long & McQuade reserves the right to restrict the purchase of additional years of Performance Warranty. Used products come with a 3-month Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Some products (i.e. computers, software, cymbals and other items) are covered only by the manufacturer‘s warranty. Consumables (i.e. strings, reeds, drum sticks, batteries, tubes, cross faders) are excluded as they are designed to be replaced. Cosmetic Damage, Accidental Damage, or problems caused by Humidity or Temperature Issues are not covered. Speakers damaged by overpowering are generally not covered. Our coverage does not provide compensation for loss of use. As of June 2018 the Performance Warranty is no longer transferable. The warranty is only valid in Canada.

Purchasing additional years of coverage

Some manufacturers provide warranties for longer than 1 year; however, these are usually limited warranties that do not provide the same coverage as the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Customers interested in more complete and convenient (but not necessarily longer) coverage are still able to purchase additional years of the Performance Warranty.

If you are interested in receiving this coverage for longer than one year, you have the option of purchasing additional years of the Performance Warranty. The pricing is as follows:

  • NEW products: Starting at 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. Starting at 4% for each additional year.
  • USED products: Starting at 4% of the current new selling price to increase the warranty from 3 months to 1 year. Starting at 4% for each additional year.
  • GUITARS: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year. $45 maximum. An additional free setup is not included with additional purchased years of Performance Warranty.
  • BAND and ORCHESTRAL instruments: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year.
