Dark Matter Distortion aims to give you that powerful, super-musical roar of an early plexi - a sound that will satisfy even the pickiest players out there. This is one of those pedals you have to try to believe what it can actually do for your distorted sounds.

From cleans with an attitude and warm bluesy tones to a crunch with grit for days and fully saturated lead sounds full of harmonics and overtones, it's all here in spades and instantly available by riding your guitar's volume knob. Dark Matter distortion is built from the highest-grade components, features an easy-access battery hatch and has a conveniently small footprint.

A whole bunch of crunch
Dark Matter Distortion defines instant gratification and will become the go-to pedal on your board for distortion. Initially, you simply plug it in and start rocking, but its many great sounds will have you playing with it for years to come. From bluesy crunch to full-on vintage cranked, but always very musical distortion sounds, this pedal was designed for the guitarists that like things a bit (or very) dirty. Featuring an all-analog circuit, dual-band tone controls, level and drive knobs and a voicing switch to tweak the bass response, you are set from creamy leads over riff-heavy stadium rock to modern, angst-ridden grunge.

By ramping up the voltage to more than 3-4 times the amount of your typical drive pedals, there is a dramatic increase in terms of headroom and dynamics, giving you a pedal with a range of sounds matched by none out there. There is plenty of gain to suit any kind of musical style, but the sound always stays very open and clear and it will never get muddy or cover up your playing.

Instead, Dark Matter Distortion has a very open character, no matter if you use it as a slight AC/DC-ish crunch or as a full-blown, fire-breathing dragon, this pedal will always let your playing shine through. All Dark Matter Distortion will do to your sound is add degrees of distortion and leave your precious tone alone.

I know I already wrote a review last year, but I've learned a lot more about the pedal since then. I still think it's an amazing pedal, and I feel it's hard to beat. The pedal performs best with low to medium gain settings. The low gain sounds are excellent for a classic rhythm tone. With the gain set in between 5 and 7, you get a singing lead tone for Bluesrock. Any gain setting above 8 results in a flubby low end. The sound of a cranked vintage Plexi is hard to accurately recreate in the form of a pedal; there is a blend of preamp and power tube drive, which cleans up when you lighten your touch. This pedal does an outstanding job at recreating that tone. It may not be the most forgiving pedal, but if you're not a sloppy player, you'll have amazing emphasis on your dynamics. When I play Blues-Based Classic Rock, I like to have an overdrive tone that sounds and responds like a cranked tube amp. When looking for such tone, this is my first choice. I've always had this pedal on my board, and I rely on it for a crunchy rhythm tone. For a lead tone, I just run a boost into my Dark Matter, and it sounds like I'm boosting a tube amp. I recommend the TC Electronic Dark Matter to anyone who's looking for a good Classic Rock drive sound. If you're looking for modern metal tones, you'd probably want to run a Tubescreamer or Klone into it for a tighter sound. This pedal performs best in Classic Rock, which is my main genre, and I love this pedal. This is a very underrated pedal, and deserves more recognition.

This is an an amazing pedal! It can turn your good for clean only solid state/digital amplifier a roaring Plexi! I’ve already done some live performances with it, and it sounds killer on the stage! If you want to get good sounds from this pedal, you must use an amplifier that works well with drive pedals, so don’t expect this to sound good if you’re using a Fender Mustang GT amplifier, since that turns any distortion into a glass jar filled with bees. Also, don’t crank up the gain. Once the gain gets to 8.5, you may think that you could get a good metal tone, but it instead sounds like a mess. To me, the level sounds like it boosts the mids as you turn it up, so you could get the sounds of different power tubes by adjusting the level, bass and treble. This is a must have for any rig. It should be used by everyone. I personally enjoy this pedal. It sounds amazing in the bedroom and live.

For me DM sounds more like an OD rather than a distortion. But I appreciate this pedal as it is not getting muddy even you have to turn the distortion into its max. With the right pedal combination, the DM, even with solid state will sound fantastic.

Buy it, you can't go wrong with this pedal. If you are into metal look elsewhere but if you are into classic rock tones you can't beat it.And the tone controls are actually useful. Well built and looks good too. Ordered it on line from Long and Mcquade and received it the next day.

The dark matter distortion is great for crunchy rhythm sounds but it doesn't have as much distortion as i would like but i recommend it to anyone who wants to play Rush or maybe low gained Green Day but not for someone who wants to play something like Dream Theater or progressive metal it is not the best

A great natural sounding overdrive pedal. with the Gain below 12 o'clock its more of a slightly dirty boost. Once you get past that plenty of lovely overtones and dirt. By no means is this a high gain pedal though - it sits somewhere between OD and a 'plexi' type pedal. Half a point off the features score for not having enough difference on the toggle switch between the rhythm and lead setting. Great pedal

This distortion pedals has very wide dynamic range. The effect of the "voicing" switch is very subtle, though. Even the drive level is 10, I can still hear each note with good clarity.

I was looking for a low gain distortion that sounds good on bass, then I seen a youtube demo where this guy was using this pedal on bass and it sounded AMAZING. I love using this pedal, sounds great on guitar and bass, I love the separate bass and treble knobs. It's built like a tank, I've dropped it three times and it still works.
