Traynor recreates the classic cathode bias amp tone in the 30-watt YGL2 all-tube two-channel combo.

Classic Tone
Traynor YGL2 uses 1 12-inch Celestion Vintage 30 speaker and hand-selected EL84 tubes configured in a proven Class-A amplifier design to deliver a truly classic amp tone. Ideal for stage or studio, the YGL2 is built to meet the need of the discerning guitarist in search of a classic, yet versatile guitar amp.

Maximum Versatility
The Traynor YGL2 offers clean and overdrive channels with separate level controls, master volume and a simple bass / mid / treble tone stack.
A Mode switch relocates the tone stack relative to the gain stage, giving the YGL2 either a crisp 'American' style tube amp tone for clarity and definition (USA mode) or a grittier, more 'spongy' 'British' flavor associated with the great UK amps of the 60s and 70s ( Brit mode).

Additional Tone Shaping
The Vintage / Modern switch on the Traynor YGL2 offers additional tone shaping that offers the player a choice between a truly classic 'vintage' tube drive or a more aggressive scooped guitar tone for the guitarist seeking a more modern guitar sound.

Unmatched Reliability
The Traynor YGL2 combo is made in Canada using solid plywood cabinet construction, heavy gauge steel chassis, high quality pots and jacks.

Q & A

Question: I have one, four years. Build seems solid from what's visible without taking apart. Currently, Gibson's new amps getting some gut shots and comments about build, surface mount, tubes on boards, says "hand wired". Nothing much on web about build. Schematics on Traynor site. How about giving us a gut shot video? What's inside?
- asked on May 18, 2024
Answer: All Traynor amps are hand built in their factory in Pickering, Ontario.

Cabinetry and electronics are top quality.

Will pass along the request for a "gut shot" video.

I reviewed this amp at 6 months ownership. It's 3 years now, so I'm updating. If you can't get the tone you want, you probably aren't using it right. It does so much and all the knobs are dynamically related. The same preamp settings at higher master gives different tones. Jazzy tone, searing lead, rock crunch, heavy chug, country twang. I got rid of overdrive pedals, I found they didn't improve what amp could do alone, and added noise to signal. I do like my 2b boost into the front. Makes louder on clean, gain without volume on ch 2. Solid build. Repairable construction.

If this amp was made anywhere other than in Canada it would be double the price! I am a gear head and often buy and trade amps, so I have owned and gigged with just about any tube amp you can think of. I am so happy with this amp, I think I'm going to be keeping this one. The build quality is impeccable, the clean channel has a wonderful chime and if you set the volume right, it breaks up just like some of the most expensive Fenders. The dirty channel really does live somewhere between Marshall and Boogie. It has it's own unique character, but sounds familiar. I only scored "Features" a 4 because I think it's just missing a D.I. out. But it sounds great with an SM57 or similar on stage.

I've had this amp about 6 months. I only play it at home, but I live in the country so I can play as load as I want.
I'm still figuring it out. It's complex. Little changed in the knobs and buttons make big difference. Master volume is useful.
I can't seem to make overdrive pedals work with it. They sound thin on clean, the overdrive channel overwhelms. Except fuzz. Fuzz sounds great. So two good actual tube break up tones. Boss EQ-7 gives nice boost that drives amp into overdrive. I'm thinking I need to look at boosts.
I bought it used. They go out as rentals, so good deals can be had on these at L&M.
No idea how it gigs. Can't compare it to any decent tube amps.
I like it

I just tried at as my possible first tube amp, and holy crap this thing is loud. Plugging it in it almost blew my head. I couldn’t even get my preferred tone settings because it was so loud. The tone was great though! It seems a little pricy for a combo, and is abit hefty but I think it rocks.

I have had a Traynor YGL1 for a number of years, a nice 15 watt tube amp. I recently purchased a YGL2, and have had it for six months. It is still a class A tube amp but quite different from the YGL1. The YGL2 has a few more features but the main difference to me is the variety of tube overdrive sounds that are available. This amp can be used without pedals to create an array of vintage tube sounds and is amazing value for the money considering it costs the same as a few decent pedals. Warm cleans and great tube overdrive sounds. I rented one at L&M to try it out before buying - it didn’t take long before I realized that I had to to have one. This is a vintage style two-channel Class A tube amp (Similar to old Vox, check out the “Class A vs. Class AB guitar amps” article on sweetwater). Lots of character and higher gain options, inspiring and fun to play, and tons of volume if needed. It has a lot of features, a quality build, quality speaker, and is not built in China (eg. Vox). I looked at the Traynor YGL-2 you-tube video a few times to help with setting up the controls for various sounds. I like having the front mount controls. I use the clean gain at 4 or 5 on the brit setting most of the time because it is cleanish when playing light, and overdriven with heavy chords. Works well with or without pedals. The included footswitch and cable for switching from the clean channel to the lead/overdrive channel as well as reverb switching is very convenient. A note about the reverb: The ygl-1 comes with a belton electronic reverb that is capable of light or very strong reverb effects. The ygl-2 comes with an accutronics spring reverb that is true to the vintage style and much more subtle. Each have their own advantages, both are good. I cannot believe what you get for the price of this amp. Great value for an all around and potentially classic Traynor tube amp.

Using a “Radial Prodigy” (head load) to attenuate and record, the YGL2 comb suddenly become a killer in both 2 channels. I can easily get a clean bite tone by turning on the “bright” button (channel 1) without any pedals, and I can also get an ideal and tight metal distortion by turning on the “modern” button (channel 2). By the way, it sounds better when you are using a ts808 with YGL2. Because I got the “Prodigy”, I can turn the ”master” knob to 4-5 in bedroom, and with the FX loop, Chorus, Delay....can work very well. Nice sounding speaker, nice sounding reverb, nice buttons, knobs and LEDs, but it has a non-protected back. So sad about that!

Picked one up second hand at L&M a couple years ago. Had just recently started playing again and also bought a Pro series Strat. Could not be happier with it. Killer clean. Killer 2nd channel. Oodles of tone and big balls for a small amp. No regrets. Anyone looking to buy a fender bluesman or the like should seriously consider this amp. This is a Made in Canada amp that stands up to all the big boys.

When I tried this amp it reminded me of a vintage amp. I recommend better tubes as they take this amp over the top. DO NOT BUY AS A REPLACEMENT OF AN AMP, BUY FOR THE QUALITY NOT THE NAME!!!!!

waiting so long to get one of these. I've had a variety of tube amps and for some reason didn't get one of these even though i loved the sound when trying one at the store. Tones of tonal options, plenty of omph for small to medium (or larger) venues, takes pedals better than any other amp I've owned. I realize maybe there are better amps for pedals, but I haven't owned or tried one. This amp kills it for blues and rock.

Purchased in Oct 13, full sound and tone with loads of versatility. First unit had some power fluctuations, amp replaced and works great. I play in the clean channel 85% of the time but it can kick out the dirty stuff when asked.

This amp sound amazing. The clean tones are crisp. The gain is great. Unfortunately they use cheap pre amp tubes. I've owned this amp for over a year and I already, twice had to replace the pre amp tubes. I recommend not using the stock pre amp tubes.

Simply the best sounding amp I've ever owned. Very easy to dial in. Excellent reverb, amazing cleans and a dynamite overdrive channel. The Vintage/Modern switch on channel 2 and the Brit/USA switch on channel 1 make this a very versatile amp. It has a series effects loop and takes pedals extremely well. This amp has some serious tone. It is built like a tank with a great warranty to back it up. I sold my Boogie because there is no need for it anymore..yes its that good!

recently got this amp because the first amp I got from Long and McQuade (Fender Deville 410 red october) I just could not get a good sound out of with my pedalboard setup so I traded it in for this and could not be happier. It takes dirt pedals very well and sounds amazing cranked.. also a very loud amp , 3 out of 12 on the volume control at my band rehearsal against my other guitarists Deville 410 which has twice the wattage and 3 more speakers and my Traynor was louder then the deville and cut through more and we rehearse LOUD. Overall amazing amp for the price, sturdy as anything just remember to click on the modern switch to get some more low end unless you want a trebly overdriven vox/fender sound. Only gripe with this amp is the tubes in the back are in the open and could get damaged if you are not careful

Great sounding amp. I use it with a Dr. Z attenuator to get power-tube umph, this beast is versatile! Everything from a nice on-the-edge-of-breakup clean to tight crunch. Quite reminiscent of a Vox AC-30, this takes pedals very well (I use three different Fulltone pedals for tone and drive) and the effects loop works beautifully with my digital effects (Digitech RP 1000 for delays, chorus, tremolo, big Jeff Beck reverb). It takes a while to dial-in your tone, but it is well worth the time. Very responsive to touch, pedals and guitar volume control, very woody tone with a Strat. Maybe not your best bet for high-gain thrash sounds, but it does everything else - great country "gank", beautiful bluesy singing tones, and it does a fantastic classic English mid-push aunch. Great amp, great value!

Most versatile amp I've ever had. Real spring reverb and a pretty amazing gain channel plus a couple cool switches to play with on the clean channel. It really is a very simple yet toughly designed amp. Loud but layered and crystal clear. For the price, I'd say this may be one of the best amps out there. Only con I see is the second input so 9/10 otherwise.

Protect your investment with the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty

A warranty can be a very important factor when making a buying decision. Because repairs can be very expensive in terms of parts and labour costs, manufacturers usually only provide one year limited warranties that generally only cover items that malfunction due to a manufacturer’s defect. With an important purchase such as a musical
instrument or piece of studio gear, however, many people want to have the peace of mind in knowing that their investment will be protected should the product no longer be performing at 100%.

Because of this, Long & McQuade provides our customers with a FREE one-year Performance Warranty on most of our products. The Long & McQuade Performance Warranty supplements the manufacturer’s warranty to ensure that our customers receive complete “no hassle” warranty coverage within their first year.

How does the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty differ from most manufacturers' warranties?
  • Performance Guarantee: Normal wear and tear is covered, so your product will be performing as well as the day you purchased it for the entire duration of the coverage. Band and Orchestral Performance Warranty does not include replacing pads or cleaning for woodwind instruments, unless deemed necessary by our repair staff. Ultrasonic cleaning for brass instruments will be provided if deemed necessary by our repair staff, but is not routinely offered under the Performance Warranty.
  • Product Replacement: If your product cannot be fixed or costs too much to fix, we will replace it with the equivalent model for no additional charge. If this is not possible, a full refund will be provided.
  • No Lemon Policy: Your product will be replaced should the same problem occur multiple times.
  • Convenient: Easy drop off and pick up of the product at any Long & McQuade location.
  • Guitar Setup: Guitars purchased at Long & McQuade come with 1 free setup, to be redeemed within 1 year for new guitars and 90 days for used guitars.
  • Loaners Available: A loaner product may be given while the product is being repaired.
  • Power Surge Protection: Your product is covered even if damaged from a power surge.
  • Accessory Coverage: Any peripheral devices or accessories that come with your product (i.e. foot pedal, case) are also covered.
  • Commercial Use Coverage: Music and recording professionals who purchase gear for “heavy-use” commercial purposes will still be covered.

Long & McQuade reserves the right to restrict the purchase of additional years of Performance Warranty. Used products come with a 3-month Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Some products (i.e. computers, software, cymbals and other items) are covered only by the manufacturer‘s warranty. Consumables (i.e. strings, reeds, drum sticks, batteries, tubes, cross faders) are excluded as they are designed to be replaced. Cosmetic Damage, Accidental Damage, or problems caused by Humidity or Temperature Issues are not covered. Speakers damaged by overpowering are generally not covered. Our coverage does not provide compensation for loss of use. As of June 2018 the Performance Warranty is no longer transferable. The warranty is only valid in Canada.

Purchasing additional years of coverage

Some manufacturers provide warranties for longer than 1 year; however, these are usually limited warranties that do not provide the same coverage as the Long & McQuade Performance Warranty. Customers interested in more complete and convenient (but not necessarily longer) coverage are still able to purchase additional years of the Performance Warranty.

If you are interested in receiving this coverage for longer than one year, you have the option of purchasing additional years of the Performance Warranty. The pricing is as follows:

  • NEW products: Starting at 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. Starting at 4% for each additional year.
  • USED products: Starting at 4% of the current new selling price to increase the warranty from 3 months to 1 year. Starting at 4% for each additional year.
  • GUITARS: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year. $45 maximum. An additional free setup is not included with additional purchased years of Performance Warranty.
  • BAND and ORCHESTRAL instruments: 4% of the current new selling price to double the warranty from 1 year to 2 years. 4% for each additional year.
