Alfred Publishing Progressive Steps to Syncopation for the Modern Drummer
Voted second on Modern Drummer's list of 25 Greatest Drum Books in 1993, Progressive Steps to Syncopation for the Modern Drummer is one of the most versatile and practical works ever written for drums. Created exclusively to address syncopation, it has earned its place as a standard tool for teaching beginning drummers syncopation and strengthening reading skills. This book includes many accented eighths, dotted eighths and sixteenths, eighth-note triplets and sixteenth notes for extended solos. In addition, teachers can develop many of their own examples from it.

I'm on my third copy since 2009, and as far as my late drum teacher and myself are concerned, this book contains the bible of exercises to learn comping. To start, just play your basic ride cymbal pattern over basic feet (light four on the floor with hi-hat on 2 & 4) while reading through the exercises and applying the snare rhythm to work on comping with your left hand on the snare by playing through the beginner exercises over and over until independence and syncopation is second nature on every limb (take turns applying the snare line to the right foot, left foot, and toms, as well).
For my first five years of using this book, I rarely even strayed past ten pages in, as we used it, in tandem, to perfect my right-hand ride cymbal rhythm, plus the book has a really reasonable progression in difficulty on its own.
Keep in mind that this isn't a theory-heavy book, and consists of charts/exercises that can be applied over and over again in order to learn multiple different skills depending on how the exercise is engaged with and applied. You'll get out of it what you put into it, but if you're diligent in your approach, this book will change your life, just like it did mine early on in my career (I switched from drumming heavy metal to swing).
