If you've played a boss pedal you know what's up as far as build quality and solidness. I've met few people who've had issues with boss gear, some say the newer ones are a bit less reliable but I got my DD3 new in 2017 and it's been as solid as any older one i've played. the steel boss enclosure remains the gold standard in solid design for pedals.
as for the sound: it's a digital delay, and it does what it does well. not the widest variety of options, none of the fancier warp or reverse feature of the newer models, but most importantly IMO is that the hold mode doesn't work the same as on later models like the DD5 or DD6. on the DD3 it always records while you're playing and loops as long as you hold the switch down, with the loop length determined by the time knob vs. the DD6 style where it records only as long as you hold the switch down - meaning you can't do the classic drill n bass glitch sounds with this. the hold mode is still usable on the DD3 for interesting and nasty weird sounds and usable but slightly less so as a short phrase looper.
ultimately if you need a simpler digital delay that is reliable and covers most of your bread and butter delay sounds (slapbacks, adding metallic digital sheen, noisy feedback, long slow decays) then the DD3 is great. not a bad value brand new, usually you can find a used one for 100-130ish if that's your inclination.
marked a point off of value and features because it's not the most fully feature design especially these days and brand new, there are options in the price range worth looking at that do have a bit more versatility, things like tap or modulation options. i was debating between a memory toy and the DD3 before i bought it and settled on DD3 mainly because I've always had good experiences with Boss and Roland products.

I have this pedal set up in my acoustic pedal board right now and its awesome the only thing I don't like is that id doesn't trail the repeats when shut off like the dd7 but it is still a great delay

I've had my DD3 for over 20 years and have had nothing but fun with it. I understand that these aren't made in Japan anymore so this may account for some of the issues people seem to be facing. I do find it sucks a ton of juice and the decay though initially quite clean begins to sound more digital the closer it gets to the end of the signal's life. This may seem a bit expensive but considering the many years of service I've had it has been money well spent.

Had this dd-3 for a few months, the switch started getting "iffy". It almost never turns on (or off) with the first click. That makes it utterly unreliable if, say, you want to use delay on a short lead and need to quickly go back to yer verse riff or whatever. In that kind of situation where you don't have much time to switch it on, you stomp on it, it either doesn't light up, or turns off as soon as you take your foot off. I've tried various non-invasive ways of making this work, but I'm 99.99% certain its that flimsy lil plastic switch. Its only useable to me if the effect can be left on continuously for a whole song. My other issue is with the lack of true bypass on boss pedals. More than one of em on your pedalboard and the life gets squeezed out of your tone. Bottom line: theres so many more options that will give you true bypass and, hey, maybe even a sturdy metal switch that'll work consistantly.

I use delays mostly to create a stereo image for guitar (split between two amps). I find that, when using this pedal in a y-configuration, the resulting sound is buzzy. I end up using the pedal from the pre-amp out of my amp, and running the wet signal to the other amp. Only problem is, the output is only exclusively wet when there's something plugged into the direct-out (so, a mono plug).
A little annoying to deal with, and a little pricey, but it's not mine anyway, so whatever.

Very basic and it sounds great. Very good build quality. This is a commonly used industry standard pedal. Dont usually use Boss products but this one fits the bill.

THis is a fantastic sounding delay pedal. It's something that is simple and acts just like an analog delay, except it's not. The loop is good but as mentioned before, it is hard to match timing. The one feature I wish it had was reverse, which I know the DD-7 pedal has but the DD-7 does not sound as crisp. Try it out!

I've heard stories about this pedal having problems for some people, but I've had mine problem-free for a few years. You can get everything from a slight reverb to a full out wake of notes trailing. I do find that unlike most boss pedals, that this one is a little highly priced, but it is indeed a decent pedal.

Very clean, digital, sterile delay sound. If you want warm vintage ambience, get an analog delay like the EHX memory toy. The only feature I currently use on this pedal is the hold feature. It's useful for looping a very short sample, but it's hard to get the right timing. Overall, an ok pedal for a very high price. This is also the only boss pedal I've ever had problems with or heard of people having problems with, reliability-wise.
