FetHead is a low-noise, high quality, in-line microphone preamplifier. It provides improved sound for Ribbon and Dynamic microphones. The electronics are housed in a robust metal chassis with a balanced 3-pole female XLR input and a balanced 3-pole male XLR output, rugged enough for use at home, in the studio or on tour.

Features

• For Ribbon and dynamic microphones
• Ultra low noise Class A JFet amplifier
• 27dBs of clean gain
• Allows your mic to perform under "no-load" condition
• Easy install - 2 clicks and done
• Lowers the noise floor of your recordings
• Shielded Enclosure
• 4 Matched JFets

Protects the microphone

Some ribbon microphones do not tolerate phantom power. FetHead's circuit uses 48v phantom power but shields it from the microphone, so the microphone is protected.

I gave the FetHead five stars under Features because it has no bells and whistles, its main feature being providing gain boost to ribbon and dynamic mics. It does it very well. More importantly, it is practically noiseless. My only complaint is about finishing quality. I ordered to units and one of them arrived with its middle logo ring detached! What kind of product quality control is that? Well, as I needed them pronto, I used superglue to attach the ring and so far so good. Other than that it is a truly outstanding product in terms of what it does. Recommended.

It doesn't get much easier than this. Works great, very little noise what more could you ask for?

Purchased a Fethead to amplify the microphone signal for a Shure SM7B and later an Electro-Voice RE20. In both applications, the Fethead was stellar in extremely low noise, clean amplification. Both microphones benefited with much more presence and balanced tone. Recommend highly! Many thanks to the team at Long McQuade for their assistance. Scored 'Features' a three (3) because the unit has no features; plug it in and it works! Love the fact it can directly connected to the Microphone.

Just bought this for my SM57 and it adds a ton of low-noise gain. Before using the Fethead I had my preamp set to about 5 o'clock (almost max), and after using it, the gain is set at around 10 o'clock (about 30%) for about the same volume. Dead silent, doesn't seem to colour the audio at all. I don't see any good reason to get the Cloudlifter over the Fethead considering the price and the smaller footprint of the Fethead.
