Saxophone Workshop with Derek Brown

Derek will discuss and demonstrate many of the various extended techniques he uses in his innovative "BEATBoX SAX" style. Throughout the presentation, Derek will stress the idea of self-exploration and innovation on the saxophone, discussing and displaying the vast sonic possibilities of the saxophone. Attendees are encouraged (but not required) to have their own saxophones on hand for some hands-on practice and experimentation. From his 30+ million views across social media to his appearance on international television and NPR’s Weekend Edition, Billboard-charting saxophonist/innovator Derek Brown and his one-of-a-kind solo “BEATBoX SAX” project has been exploding across the world music scene. Jens will share his insights into technique, practicing and sound development, interspersed with anecdotes from his career as a soloist and chamber musician the world over. Jens Lindemann is hailed as one of the most celebrated artists in his instrument’s history and was recently named “International Brass Personality of the Year” (Brass Herald). Jens has played both jazz and classical in every major concert venue in the world. His career has ranged from appearing internationally as an orchestral soloist, being featured at the 2010 Olympics for an audience of 2 billion people, national anthems at the Rose Bowl and for the San Francisco Giants on Memorial Day, performing at London’s ‘Last Night of the Proms’, recording with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir to playing lead trumpet with the renowned Canadian Brass and a solo Command Performance for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Jens has also won major awards ranging from Grammy and Juno nominations to winning the prestigious Echo Klassik in Germany and British Bandsman 2011 Solo CD of the year as well as receiving several honorary doctorates.

 

Tuba Workshop with Patrick Sheridan

Discover how breathing can help keep your brain ready to learn! Patrick Sheridan is one of the most celebrated tuba soloists in his instrument's history. He has performed more than 3,000 concerts in over 50 countries in venues ranging from the White House to NBA half-time shows to the Hollywood Bowl. He is a former member of "The President's Own" United States Marine Band and has been featured on NBC's "Today Show" and NPR's "All Things Considered." Patrick has served on the music faculties at Arizona State University, Northern Arizona University, The Rotterdam Conservatory, The Royal Northern College of Music and The Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. He most recently served on the music faculty at UCLA where he conducted the Brass Ensemble and Wind Ensemble and taught tuba/euphonium. Along with Sam Pilafian, he is the co-author of the world's best selling method for instrumental improvement, The Breathing Gym®, which won the 2009 EMMY Award for Instructional/Informational Video Production.

 

Saxophone Workshop with Kelly Jefferson

Juno-award winning jazz saxophonist, composer and educator Kelly Jefferson will discuss and demonstrate effective ways to approach the fundamentals of improvisation. Establishing an effective balance of “what” and “how” to practice can pave the way for challenging, creative and fun ways to play. Topics covered will include learning standard jazz repertoire, developing a strong and personal sense of rhythm, the levels of listening involved with learning and playing this music, as well as some useful tools to help guide you through your journey. Kelly Jefferson has a Bachelor of Music from McGill University in Montreal and a Masters degree from Manhattan School of Music in New York City and is thrilled to be on faculty at The University of Toronto. Kelly has toured extensively in Canada, the United States, Japan, Thailand, Europe, South Korea and China, including a nine-month tour in 2000 as the tenor saxophonist with legendary trumpeter Maynard Ferguson. His quartet recording “Next Exit”, was nominated for a 2011 Juno Award for Contemporary Jazz Album of the Year. Kelly was also a five-time nominee for Saxophonist of the Year by the National Jazz Awards.

 

Clarinet workshop with André Moisan (Bilingual)

From warming up to the development of a smooth and precise technique as well as the quality of articulation, this workshop will teach you how to prepare effectively for an audition or a concert. André will also discuss the maintenance of your instrument to get the most out of it. Internationally renowned for his technical mastery, fine musicality, and the clarity of his playing, André Moisan has been an avid performer since 1977, both in concert and on radio broadcasts, as a soloist, chamber musician, and member of the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal (OSM). His numerous concerts abroad, notably at Carnegie Hall, the Royal Concertgebouw and broadcast on Radio Berlin have earned him the stature of a leading performer.

 

Violin Workshop with Moshe Hammer

Moshe Hammer brings his years of experience as a soloist, chamber musician and teacher to this warm and engaging session to help string players of all levels improve. Topics will include sound production, vibrato, left-hand position and practice habits. He will also share best practices for improving musicianship including building and releasing tension in phrases, shaping sound colours and dynamics, balancing chords and proper listening habits for chamber musicians. World-renowned violinist and teacher, Moshe Hammer, is admired for his artistic style, unique interpretations and vibrant tone. As a student of Jascha Heifetz he was a medal winner at the Concours Jacques Thibaud in Paris. Hammer’s tours have taken him across North America, Europe, Israel and the Far-East. His performances have consistently energized critics, thrilled audiences and earned respect among his colleagues. A naturalized Canadian, Moshe Hammer has travelled the concert venues of the world and performed with many symphony orchestras. He was also the founder and leader of the Toronto based chamber group, The Amadeus Ensemble. Hammer loves to work with young musicians and offers master-classes everywhere he travels. His wide ranging discography reflects a multi-faceted talent. In 2007 Moshe launched The Hammer Band – From Violence to Violins. With this project, school kids in priority areas are presented with free music lessons and violins.

She is an established international soloist, recitalist and chamber musician, and her appearances include numerous venues spanning the continents of North America, South America, throughout Europe, Japan and China. Susan is a JUNO nominee and her numerous recordings are available on labels including Marquis Classics, EMI, Centrediscs/Naxos and Grammophon BIS. As a graduate of The Juilliard School, she has become an esteemed mentor. Susan is a member of faculty at the Royal Conservatory’s Glenn Gould School, The Taylor Academy for young gifted artists and the University of Toronto. Every summer she gives classes and performances at Le Domaine Forget in Québec, Canada and Campus Internazionale della Musica d’Arte (CIMA) in Italy.
